“Learn to “See”
Introductory Level
Class One, February 20-22, 2008
This class aims to teach you to “see through the eyes of an artist” as you delight in the art of plants.
Objectives of program
An introduction to botanical art, through innovative drawing and painting techniques, that leads to successfully completed botanical “watercolour illustrations”. Jenny Phillips will take you step-by-step through the specific skills needed for perspective drawing of leaves and flowers, tonal work and light and shade. The class will also introduce you to watercolour, mixing and handling techniques and the painting of a simple monochromatic study.
You will be encouraged to maintain a class work book, where notes and exercises will act as a ready reference of course content, and to begin a sketch book of reference drawings. This could lead to the creation of a visual diary which is useful for future projects.
Bring examples of your own pencil sketches or watercolour paintings. If you haven’t had experience with detailed drawing then bring to the class a pencil drawing of a live flower complete with stem and a couple of leaves.
Jenny will give you plenty of encouragement and as much individual guidance as possible. You’re assured to leave “the mountains” inspired to pursue this art form.
This class will include outdoor sketching in the Lilianfels magnificent gardens and an evening lecture.

“Creative Applications”
Advanced Level
Class Two, February 24-27, 2008
Be inspired and scale new heights in your botanical art with our advanced level paintings classes hosted by Jenny Phillips, Australia's most influencial botanical arts teacher today.
Objectives of program
Select unique flora from the beautiful gardens surrounding Lilianfels to study and refine your Botanical Art skills. A deeper awareness for the art will be achieved by promoting a consciousness for artistic sensitivity and creative thinking. In doing so you’ll achieve greater fulfillment and pleasure from your botanical subjects.
Jenny’s concepts and watercolour techniques will ensure you create inspirational artwork that exudes vibrant realism within a framework of artistic concepts. With new insight and innovative techniques you’ll be encouraged to think outside the box when choosing approaches which are best suited to portraying a subject.
This master class will focus on the development of one botanical study, capturing the effects of light and shade in painting. Under Jenny’s step-by-step instruction, apply your techniques firstly to a monochromatic painting and then also to a colour study.
Each student will be personally encouraged by Jenny who thoroughly enjoys sharing her wealth of knowledge around this unique art form.
Some questions to consider:
(1) How to ‘ connect’ to the subject and express this through your art?
(2) How to attract the viewer of botanical art to your art piece – and hold their attention?
This master class will help you to find answers – to be challenged, inspired and to delight in achieving further heights in your art!
